The Metaphysical Origin of the Principles of Logic in Plotinus鈥� Emanative System

The scope and utility of logical principles, particularly the principle of non-contradiction, are circumscribed. The divine Intellect is asserted to be simultaneously one and many absolutely and without qualification. 聽If there are Plotinian metaphysical realms which transcend the logical principles, but others within which they hold sway, then these principles must have a source or origin within Plotinus鈥� emanative system. 聽Dr Stanbury attempts to identify the metaphysical origin of the logical principles in the process by which the world soul emanates from the divine Intellect, focusing particularly on the implications of Ennead III.7: 聽On Eternity and Time.

This talk will be of special interest to those thinking about Augustine鈥檚 Trinitarian theology, the mystical theology of Dionysius and Bonaventure and of Nicholas of Cusa.

The Pythian Games will be played again this year at 5:00 pm on Friday, March 10th. The theme of this year鈥檚 Games is the Muses. The happy mixture of poetry, music, and performance for which the games are renowned will be under the direction of Dr Christopher Grundke, Acting Precentor. The registration deadline for participants has been extended to March 1st.

Dr Peter O'Brien, King鈥檚 Vice-President

Dr Roberta Barker, Associate Dean of Arts and Social Sciences

Dr Peter O'Brien (Honours, 1990; MA, 1992) will succeed another alumnus of Classics, Kim Kierans (Honours, 1983), as the Vice-President of the University of King鈥檚 College, on July 1, 2017. Dr Roberta Barker (Honours in Classics and English, 1997) will become Associate Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, on July 1, 2018. Both of these award winning King鈥檚 Carnegie Professors will continue some teaching in Classics and Theatre respectively. Not since Colin Starnes (PhD, 1976) was President of King鈥檚 聽(1993-2003) has an active member of the Department held such high office in the College. Confident in their gifts, we wish both Peter and Roberta courage and good fortune in the work of rebuilding. 聽

Peter (BA First Class Honours, 2009; MA, 2012) and Erin Bullerwell are celebrating the birth of Walter Lawrence Bullerwell on January the 20th. Katie and Justin (1st year MA studies) Wolff rejoice in Flora Anne Wolff born 聽the 15th of February.

Concluding Lecture for the 2016-17 Foundation Year Programme

Dr Wayne Hankey will deliver this Lecture on Monday April 10 at 9:30 am in Alumni Hall at Kings. Entitled 鈥淲e have come to a certain end of Western Civilization: Endings and Beginnings鈥�, the lecture will be followed by a reception.

Dionysius 34 (2016)

Dionysius 34 for 2016 is out with articles on polytheism, Socrates & Skepticism, Plato, Aristotle, Proclus, Dionysius the Areopagite, Albertus Magnus and Thomas Aquinas. There is a mix of senior scholars and those making promising starts including two from the Department.
