Manitoba has designated February 18 a holiday and named it "Louis Riel Day." Louis Riel was the M茅tis leader who commanded two rebellions in western Canada and was tried, convicted and hanged for treason in 1885. (See: )

Meanwhile, Ontario, Alberta and Saskachewan聽are calling the mid-winter holiday "Family Day." In this province, Liberal MLA Diana Whalen has聽tried without success聽to name the third Monday in February Joe Howe Day.
