Last weekend Tigers teams faced tough competition resulting in some key wins and a few difficult losses.
Dalhousie hosted the Men鈥檚 Volleyball Interlock Tournament, which included Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS)听teams Laval, Sherbrooke, Montreal, Memorial, and UNB. The Tigers started off the weekend strongly with a 3-0 victory over Montreal, but on Saturday were defeated 3-0 by Sherbrooke and 3-1 by Laval.
This weekend, men鈥檚 volleyball will host Memorial for matches on Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m.

This past weekend the Tigers swim teams shredded the competition in the UPEI Atlantic University Sport (AUS)听invitational, with the women winning 12 of 16 individual events. Leading the way was first-year student Ceilidh MacPherson, with victories in the 200-metre freestyle, as well as the 200 metre and 400 metre individual medleys. Second-year student Tavia Raiche-Marsden was victorious in the 200-metre freestyle and the 50-metre butterfly. Megan Bernier swept the 400-metre and 800-metre freestyle, and Teri-Lynn Benison won the 100-metre and 200-metre butterfly. The Tigers also claimed both the freestyle and medley relays.
The men鈥檚 team had three triple event winners at the meet. Top honours belonged to Joe Ur, who won the 50-metre butterfly, as well as the 100 metre and 200 metre freestyle. Bryan Fumerton was victorious in the 200-metre and 400-metre individual medley, and the 400-metre freestyle and Kit Moran claimed all three backstroke events at the meet. David Sharpe and Cameron Shin crushed the competition in their events as well. Mr. Sharpe won the 100-metre and 200-metre butterfly while Mr. Shin won the 100-metre and 200-metre breaststroke. Matt Piggott also found victory in the 1500-metre freestyle.
Dalhousie will host the 2011 AUS swim championships February 11-13 at Dalplex.
This weekend the track and field Tigers got their first taste of competition at the new Canada Games Centre in Clayton Park. Ashley Ryer and Jessica Belliveau opened their season with a 1,500-metre race, finishing 4:38.75 and 4:38.80 respectively. Their scores landed them CIS 6 and 7 place rankings.
The men鈥檚 team also enjoyed success this weekend.听Michael Bawol clocked a new 60-metre personal best of 7.03. Also running personal bests in the 300 metre were Justin Blades (36.06) and Nabil Moussa (37.92). Daniel Yetman improved on his long jump personal best to 6.4 metres and Jordan Leonard recorded an indoor best of 10.41 metres in the triple jump.
Dalhousie men鈥檚 hockey had two home games this past weekend. Friday night the team bested the STU Tommies 9-6. Assistant captain Benjamin Breault netted three goals and one assist to earn Subway Player of the Game honours. Forward Francois Gauthier collected two goals and one assist as well. Saturday the Tigers lost to the Aigles Bleus 6-4. The Tigers are still holding onto a playoff spot in听sixth place in the AUS, just four points ahead of Universite of Moncton and three points behind St. FX.
This weekend women鈥檚 hockey will host UdeM at home on Friday at 7 p.m. and Saint Mary's听on Sunday at 7 p.m. Saturday鈥檚 game鈥檚 the annual Think Pink game, played in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, Atlantic Region.
Dalhousie basketball faced difficult battles with Cape Breton University听last weekend. The women lost 75-52 on Saturday and 84-59 on Sunday. The men had closer games, but lost 89-84 on Saturday and 71-62 on Sunday. In Saturday鈥檚 game Simon Farine had 20 points and Juelous Grant had 14, nine of which were three-pointers.
Women鈥檚 and men鈥檚 basketball host Memorial at Dalplex this weekend in games on Saturday at 6 p.m. (women) and 8 p.m. (men) and on Sunday at听noon (women) and 2 p.m. (men).
Athletes of the week
Ceilidh MacPherson led her team in last weekend鈥檚 UPEI AUS invitational swim meet. Her endurance in the pool helped her claim victories in the 200-metre freestyle as well as the 200-metre and 400-metre individual medleys. Her impressive performance helped to spur her teammates to success as three other women claimed double victories at the meet.听Ms.MacPherson听is a first-year science student from Canning, N.S. Joe Ur, Swimming Second-year Tiger Joe Ur earned first place finishes in the 50-metre butterfly as well as the 100-metre and 200-metre freestyle at the UPEI AUS invitational this past weekend. A hard worker in the pool,听the commerce student听has excelled while completing a challenging co-op work term schedule this semester. |
