Remembering Stewart McInnes

The Dalhousie community is saddened by the news of the passing of the Honorable Donald Stewart McInnes. Mr. McInnes, who was 78, was a senior partner with the law firm McInnes Cooper for nearly 40 years, represented Halifax in the Canadian House of Commons and was a devoted community advocate.

Mr. McInnes came from a Dalhousie family 鈥 in fact, , starting with his grandfather Hector McInnes in 1888. Stewart earned his law degree from Dal in 1961, following his Bachelor of Arts in 1958. During his time at Dalhousie, he was a member of both the hockey (1956-60) and football (1954-61) teams. In 2004, McInnes was inducted to the Dalhousie Sport Hall of Fame as a member of the 1954 Purdy Cup-winning football team and, just this past May, was awarded Dalhousie鈥檚 A.J. 鈥淪andy鈥 Young Award for Great Contribution to Sport in Nova Scotia, recognizing his lifetime of generosity towards athletics in the province.

Mr. McInnes鈥 devotion to Dalhousie continued throughout his life. He served on various communities over the years; chaired the Dalplex fundraising campaign; sat on the university鈥檚 Board of Governors from 1978-84; was a member of the Schulich School of Law鈥檚 Bertha Wilson Honour Society; and received a Dalhousie honorary degree in 2000.
