Do we still need vaccines?

Vaccines have been lauded as one of the great public health achievements of the 20th century, but in our healthy, affluent, materially-advanced world, are they still needed? In this pop-up lecture, Dr. Joanne Langley discusses how vaccines work, how the nature of infectious disease influences vaccine science, and how research centres such as the Canadian Center for Vaccinology at 新澳门六合彩 are addressing the challenges of infectious diseases in a world of emerging and re-emerging pathogens.

Dr. Joanne Langley is a professor of pediatrics (Division of Infectious Diseases) and community health and epidemiology at 新澳门六合彩. Dr. Langley currently serves as associate director (Clinical Evaluation Unit) of the Canadian Center for Vaccinology (CCfV), is an investigator in the Canadian Immunization Research Network (CIRN), is a pediatric infectious disease consultant at the IWK Health Centre, and CIHR-GSK Chair in Pediatric Vaccinology. Dr. Langley鈥檚 main research interests are in the epidemiology and prevention of respiratory infections, particularly Respiratory Syncytial Virus and influenza.

"I moved from Buenos Aires, Argentina, to St. John's, Newfoundland in 2002. Since then, the ocean and nature have been a powerful inspiration to my family and me. This is why programs like Dal鈥檚 Aboriginal Health Science Initiative and PLANS program are so important鈥攖o interest individuals from these communities in the possibility of careers in medicine. We also have to work at attracting and including individuals of other under-represented populations, such as the LGBTQ community, people with disabilities, and those who are economically disadvantaged. These concepts are important in the development of great physicians. One of the most important qualities a physician must have is empathy. Engaging, collaborating, and working with peers and colleagues with multiple diverse perspectives and life experiences provides students with opportunities to build on their ability to understand and share another鈥檚 feelings."

"My role at the medical school involves providing expertise in financial and payroll related activities. It is a pleasure having the opportunity to associate with faculty, staff, and students alike. My ping-pong success in Nova Scotia started at Dalhousie Table Tennis Club in Dalplex, enabling me to achieve the top player status in Nova Scotia and represent the province at the Atlantic and Canadian National Championships in 2015. "In 2002, I joined the staff at what is now the Department of Medical Neuroscience and home of the Human Body Donation Program. I had worked as a funeral director and embalmer for over a decade, but was quickly engulfed in this new atmosphere. I began taking anatomy classes through the department and soon started instructing the labs I was preparing. Now, I鈥檓 the coordinator of anatomical laboratories in the department. I still maintain my license as a funeral director and embalmer, and am enrolled in the Diploma in Emergency Health Services Management here at Dal. "When Dalhousie Medicine New Brunswick was recruiting faculty to join a unique, open-access research team, I knew I wanted in on the ground floor. It was an ideal place to start a patient-centred, translational medicine program. There was no burden of history, and NB was the only place in the country with a bilingual, province-wide, centralized cardiovascular care centre. It鈥檚 much easier to follow through on your research in a smaller region鈥攜ou can easily discuss issues with clinicians and follow-up with patients.
